What You Keep Seeing
Why your mind keeps proving itself right
There’s something else I’ve been noticing alongside this idea of attention.
It’s not just that we look in a certain direction. It’s that once we start looking there, we keep finding more of the same.
There’s a name for this — confirmation bias — but you don’t really need the label to recognise it. It shows up in very ordinary ways.
If you think people are difficult, you notice every difficult interaction. If you think things never quite work out, you spot every example that proves it. If you believe you’re not very good at something, you collect evidence for that too.
And over time, it starts to feel like fact.
But what’s actually happening is much simpler.
You’re filtering.
Out of everything happening around you, your mind is selecting what fits the story you already hold — and quietly ignoring the rest.
Part of that is simply how the brain works. It’s constantly trying to make sense of the world by predicting what’s important and filtering out what isn’t. It can’t process everything, so it looks for patterns — and once it thinks it’s found one, it keeps reinforcing it.
I’ve caught myself doing this more times than I can count.
Telling myself something wasn’t going well, and then unconsciously gathering all the little moments that supported that view. Or telling myself someone didn’t like me because of tiny things — they didn’t reply quickly, they seemed distracted the last time I saw them.
And missing the clues that didn’t fit that story.
That maybe they had a lot on their mind.
That they didn’t hear my question.
Or even the most obvious one — they’re not you, so of course they won’t always react in ways you expect. They’re just different.
Not because those explanations weren’t there — but because I wasn’t looking for them.
It links directly back to that question:
Where am I actually looking?
Because once you start looking in a certain place, your mind gets very good at helping you stay there.
This is why change can feel so difficult. Not because nothing is shifting, but because you’re still noticing the same things.
And equally, it’s why small shifts in attention can have a much bigger impact than you expect.
If you deliberately start looking for something different — not in a forced way, just with a bit more awareness — you begin to see things that were always there. You just weren’t giving them your attention.
Again, this isn’t about pretending everything is positive. It’s about recognising that your mind is constantly building a case, and it will build it from whatever you keep showing it.
So a simple place to start is this:
What story am I quietly proving right?
And just as importantly…
What am I not seeing?
You don’t have to change everything. But if you change what you’re willing to notice, even slightly, the picture begins to shift.
And once the picture shifts, direction follows.
